Pacifica Hotels was renovating an underperforming 4-star hotel in Hermosa Beach. They invited us to create a new identity that would contrast strong neighboring competitors. Our insight was that this area was less “beachfront luxury” and more “party central” for locals. So we saw an opportunity in repositioning the hotel with an irreverent edge. With that, the sea monster was born, clowning standard coastal luxury (seahorses, shells, dolphins) and pushing the brand into the bar, pool and outdoor game areas.
Because the renaming and rebranding of the hotel coincided with an extensive renovation, we had an opportunity to extend the visual language into every area of the hotel. We designed in-room collateral, door hangers, gift bags, cups, napkins, menus — all the way up to interior and exterior signage. Our favorites are the three story neon sea monster on the side of the building and a “lite-brite” wall activation in the main corridor.

A lot of the design detail went into making the bar and public areas of the hotel worthy of word-of-mouth promotion. Shown is a favorite — collectible wooden coasters for the patio.
